Project notes for Lullaby for the Sun:

Lullaby for the Sun is a series of scored dances done in a bathtub at sunset. 2 of 5 sessions were successfully recorded, the 5th hasn’t happened yet. The two recordings have been used to make the film version of this work.

Music: Sound is a significant source material in this work, though only one song got edited into the film. This song, “Dreams” by Kelsey Lu, was selected for the absolute emotional quality of th e sound. While editing, I seriously considered cutting the film’s audio out entirely, as I wasn’t editing in line with the music. I thought it might be more honest for the work not to be read into as a pairing. The idea of the audience adding their own choice of music, still appeals to me. Upon adding 2 clips of “Dreams”, I decided to keep it as the score for this version. The strings resonate in me with an expansive honesty, in combination with the glinting sun, a secret is shared with the audience.

Other sounds used as source material were Claire de Lune No. 3 (Claude Debussy, Isao Tomita), Océan rouge (Flavien Berger), wind chimes, grass, singing in the shower, and Green Arrow (Yo La Tengo). Meditation on “orchestra”.

Garb: Exploration in costume as character, in character as processing experience through a vessel that is personal but somewhat apart from oneself. Consider reflection, comfort.

Location: neutral ground, privacy, water, (is it) vulnerability (?), light. Consider reflection, texture, stability.

Time: Orange and yellow. Temporal departure. Awe.
